Today I took down my WordPress site and I have now started on my new Drupal based site. My plan is to document the site's transition and growth as I go. I hope by documenting my experiances, others may follow or learn by my mistakes. I've got a USB version already loaded and have downloaded several modules and have already started playing with some of them. That's step one.
Step two is obtaining any and all other documentation I can find (including links) to sites similar to what I want and any other how-to stuff. For me, since I'm trying to document everything, step three was running a script on my web host and tweaking a few files. Next, I've 'shut down' the site to the public as I do some behind the sceens tweaking.
For some background to others following my lead, I've made the following decisions already:
- I've basically mapped the menu on in a MS Word doc so I can keep my head together. I've already documented notes about how I want things to look or work down along with the sitemap. It's 4 pages already complete with tables, tabs, and bullets.. oh my!
- The site will have a blog. Mine. It will contain my drupal how to, my geek ramblings, CAD talk, and any other stuff I feel like posting. Maybe with a tag cloud to keep it clean?
- The site will have categories. Off the top of my head (By County, CAD, Drupal, the Directory
- The site will have a Business Directory or Yellow Pages Listing (initial looking has already determined this to be a major stumbling block for Drupalites - No add-on or module exist for it) My categories have already be laid out based off of my old site.
- Some 'static' pages. Describing my business/what I can do for you.
- Maybe some Forums for community chat.
- A Community Calendar. If I can get enough input to keep them populated.
- A Links page. Mainly for all my Pontiac and other car Links plus some software I approve of.
- And... if I can get past the whole Directory thing.. a Classifieds section so people can buy and sell without paying eBay to do it.
